Human Kindness is Not Enough
There are many wonderful quotes about kindness and “human kindness” that invite imitation. Is human kindness sufficient?
I would invite you to understand how inferior “human kindness” is. I invite you to stop limiting yourself to practicing human kindness. Go higher.
Instead, listen to David’s way:
2 Samuel 9:3 – Then the king said, “Is there no one remaining of the house of Saul to whom I could show the kindness of God?”
Human kindness might have rewarded Saul’s family with exile or a quick death. That was the way of conquering kings when showing kindness. The kindness of the Lord rewards by showing mercy and grace. In the case of Jonathan’s son, not only did he receive all the land of his grandfather Saul, but also a place at David’s table. The same “table” where Saul tried to murder David with a spear (1 Samuel 18-19), is now a place of companionship.
Today, although former enemies, due to God’s kindness, Jesus’s victory does not lead us into exile or a merciful and kind death. When sharing in Jesus’s triumph, we receive our former enemies. Inviting people who have sinned against us to share in Jesus’s supper, is the kindness of God. Churches need more of God’s kindness shown to one another. Instead of splitting, grudge holding, and gossiping, today we need more receiving and accepting through healing. Today we need to humbly share a place at our King’s table.
