Jeremiah 2:5 – Becoming Like What We Worship
Jokes are made about long-time married couples starting to act and even look like one another (poor Janet!). Such is even said about dogs and their owners as seen in Lady and the Tramp! Humor often is funny because it embodies a kernel of truth. That kernel of truth is we reflect what we love, and become more like those with whom we spend time. Close relationships changes us – whether for better or worse.
Likewise spiritually this is a key to holiness. Since worship is about love, we become like what we worship:
• Jeremiah 2:5 (CSB) This is what the LORD says: What fault did your ancestors find in me that they went so far from me, followed worthless idols, and became worthless themselves?
The KJV says, “and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?” While the NASB reads,
“And walked after emptiness and became empty?”
Worthless, vain, and empty. Sounds too familiar, too much like modern, secular, even anti-Christian society.
Also sounds like a harvest white, where people are facing lives that are bleak and missing meaning.
As believers, IF we are NOT becoming more like God in our attributes, attitudes, and actions, THEN:
1. We are limiting what attributes, attitudes, and actions of God in which we are willing to partake.
2. We are not spending enough time with God to better learn His attributes, attitudes, and actions.
3. We are not valuing or loving God’s attributes, attitudes, and actions over and above our own.
Are we ready to be changed by our worship? Are we ready to help others fill their emptiness and find worth? Are we wanting to be there for them? Are we becoming more like WHO they need?
If so, then first, we have to become more like WHO we need!
