Jeremiah 36:23 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV

Jeremiah 36:23 NASB  When Jehudi had read three or four columns, the king cut it with a scribe’s knife and threw it into the fire that was in the brazier, until all the scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the brazier.

Jeremiah 36:23 HCSB As soon as Jehudi would read three or four columns, Jehoiakim would cut the scroll with a scribe’s knife and throw the columns into the blazing fire until the entire scroll was consumed by the fire in the brazier.

Jeremiah 36:23 ESV  As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king would cut them off with a knife and throw them into the fire in the fire pot, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the fire pot.

The HCSB and ESV, along with the NET, present a dramatically different scene than does the NASB. After checking several translations, I am inclined to believe that the NASB is incorrect. In reading the NASB, the scene, as it appears to me, is far more static. Jehudi reads once, the king cuts the scroll once and throws it into the fire once. The HCSB presents a scene far more dramatic. The reading and cutting are ongoing, not just one time events. Jehudi would read three or four columns, get interrupted by a knife, keep reading, and again the knife would cut the scroll, until this happened so many times that finally the last part of the scroll cut and thrown into the blazing fire by the king.
