The Gist of Judges – What Went Wrong?
What went wrong and why?Compare the first and last verses of Judges and the gist of the book is revealed:
1:1 – “The Israelites inquired of the LORD”
21:25 – “Every one did what was right in in his own eyes.”
Subsequent generations descended into a moral morass. They stopped inquiring of the Lord and began seeking what is best in their own eyes. They became their own moral and religious Judges.
Right and Wrong, True Worship and False Gods bevsme defined by inquiring themselves. They became their own Authority.
• WHAT makes “ME” happy?
• HOW can OUR Churches attract more people?
Authority is an essential aspect of life and religion. When authority is studied, do our eyes glaze over? Do we prefer application without studying authority? How do we discover the right application unless we first inquire of the Lord?
Simply put, we either inquire of God by seeking what is right in His eyes; or we do what is right in our eyes by becoming our own god. That is the gist of Judges and of our problems today.
