Leviticus 23:3 – “Have to” vs “Get to”
“Get dressed, we have to go to church.” Ever say that to your children? Should you say that?
In Leviticus Moses preached, “Work may be done for six days, but on the seventh day there is to be a Sabbath of complete rest, a sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; it is a Sabbath to the LORD wherever you live.” (CSB Leviticus 23:3)
All know the 7th day Sabbath (there were other Sabbaths) was a day of physical refreshment – no work. Unfortunately it became a man-made burden. Concerning the Sabbath, do we forget it was also a day of spiritual reflection (why they kept they Sabbth – Ex.20; Deut.5) and spiritual refreshment via “a sacred assembly”.
Think of it this way, when we go on vacation, we get away from the daily grind, physically and emotionally. No one says, “Get dressed we got to go on vacation.” When we gather as a spitiual family, we get a respite from the world physically, emotionally, and spiritually. So say this to yourself and children, “Get dressed, we get to go to church.” And if you want to, add, “and celebrate!”
