Proverbs 18:13,17 – Listening to Yourself Teach
Studying with people with whom you disagree can be spiritually beneficial even if you are not having an impact on them. It can help you sharpen what you believe. By this I do not mean help you make better arguments or even remember scriptures for what you want to prove. I do mean that we all can fall into spiritual, intellectual, and even theological “Church Doctrine Ruts” wherein we overemphasis one side of truth to the almost total neglect of the other. So study with others but don’t just talk; listen. Listen to them. Listen to yourself. Even if you don’t do them any good, you can do good to yourself: Proverbs 18:13 – The one who gives an answer before he listens — this is foolishness and disgrace for him. Proverbs 18:17 – The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him
