Proverbs 5-7 – Sex Education
Should I apologize for Biblical subject matter? Not if I believe God’s hand revealed it! And the following topic is very real. So here goes…. Recently I saw a billboard which read, “Talk to your children about sex – everyone else does.” Shocking? Sobering? God wants us parents to prepare our children both positively and negatively for this real world experience. Read Proverbs 5-7. We live in a society today – and apparently so did Solomon – where such warnings are needed.
Illicit sex leads to:
- Your hard earned goods going to another (5:10) – Illegitimacy is expensive.
- Your flesh and your body being consumed (5:11) – STD’s are debilitating.
- Your anger being turned in toward yourself (5:12) – Regret can last a life-time.
In Proverbs 5-7 most of the advice is practical, hard-hitting, and down to earth. Just what our kids need. We shouldn’t “talk over the heads” of our children, but rather be real with them. Notice that this Biblical father doesn’t mince words with his son. He speaks both of the jubilations and tribulations of sex. Joy if with your wife. Trouble if with another.
Along with the practical advice, there is also this spiritual fact – For the ways of a man are before the eyes of the Lord, and He watches all his paths (5:21) – NASB. I guess we could say, “Watch yourself and the way you watch others because God is watching you.”
Practical advice and spiritual awareness – both are as real as…well, you know.
