Psalm 23 Jesus and Me
As a Hebrew and Israelite, when David wrote the first line of what has become enumerated as the 23rd Psalm, he had no other known meaning than, “YAHWEH is my Shepherd”. As followers of Jesus, we know Him as the great shepherd because of John 10. In that sense, join me in rewording the Psalm in the image of Jesus. For the sake of emphasis, I will replace deified pronouns with the name of Jesus. Also, I will replace the Psalmist’s language with equivalent NT language, imagery, and scriptural text.
• “Jesus is my great shepherd (John 10:11,14).
• I have been made full in Him (Colossians 2:10).
• Jesus lets me lie down for He is the peace that passes all understanding (Philippians 4:6).
• Jesus gives me water of life which then resides within me (John 7:38-39).
• Jesus makes me born again (John 3:5).
• Jesus leads me along the narrow way for His name’s sake (Matthew 7:13-14).
• Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for Jesus is the resurrection (John 11:25).
• Jesus sent the rod and the staff who comforts me, the Holy Spirit (John 14:16).
• Jesus prepared the table of the Lord before me in the presence of my enemies (1 Corinthians 10:21)
• Jesus anoints my head with the Holy Spirit (1 John 2:27)
• My cup overflows because Jesus did not let His cup pass from Him (Luke 22:39-46)
• Only goodness and faithful love will pursue me God is faithful (1 Corinthians 1:9).
• And I will dwell in the house of Jesus Christ as long as I live and even after I die.” (John 14:1-3)
Let’s us thank God that we know the fuller meaning of Psalm 23 and Jesus and me.
