Psalms – A Broken Hallelujah

A Broken Hallelujah (The Psalms) – My faith has moods. Leonard Cohen recently died and so his song Hallelujah has been on the minds of many. A Catholic Priest asked a woman to sing it at his church, but she didn’t think the lyrics were a proper fit. I can sympathize. So she wrote other lyrics known as the “Easter” version. The problem with Cohen’s cryptic verses is possibly a problem with how we – I – think of faith and even sing. Faith, at least my faith, has moods; some of which are uncomfortable. The Psalms are filled with uncomfortable moods. Yet our songs seem to glorify only one mood of faith. Maybe we need to sing that one, strong, comfortable, faith as a remembrance because ours is so often weak and uncomfortable. I need to experience my various moods because they are real. But in the end, I stand on a faith that is strong in Who I believe in…even when I am emotionally living in doubt, fear, and confusion. So if you too have a faith which has moods, sing Hallelujah, even when it is a broken hallelujah.
