God Doesn’t Call the Qualified; God Qualifies the Called?
God Doesn’t Call the Qualified, He Qualifies the Called?
There is a common saying, “God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called.” That sounds good and pious, especially when you look at the rest of the quote, “It is the One who called that is important not the one who is called. Understanding and remembering this is the key to our every step in faith.” I like the fact that it is emphasizing God working in our lives. But we must also understand that God can qualify us long before needing us.
A principle of spiritual life is that God often builds our leadership skills until we are ready to be used by Him. He builds us before using us.
- Elders gain experience in their families first and then the church.
- Moses learned wilderness living before leading the Israelites into the wilderness.
- Nehemiah was a trusted cupbearer in the house of the king before being used to build a wall, and then to lead God’s people as governor.
Are we willing to be leaders? Are we willing to be used by God? Biblical history proves that God can and will use us, whether we want to or not! Think about that:
- God can use me (anyone) even if my heart is against Him – Pharaoh (Exodus 14:17-18).
- God can use me (anyone) even if my heart is not with Him – Cyrus (2 Chronicles 36:22-23).
- God can use me (anyone) even if I change my heart only partly (Jonah 3:10-4:1).
- God can use me (anyone) when I give my heart completely (Nehemiah).
How much of our heart are we willing to give to God? Are we willing to lead alone, or in difficult situations? Are we willing to lead in small ways so that we can be trained for God’s greater causes?
God does qualify the called; but God also calls the qualified.
