If You Could Change 1 Thing
If you could change one thing about yourself and:
1) Haven’t tried – there is a difference between a wish and work.
2) Tried but failed – there is a difference between trying on your own and being changed by the Holy Spirit.
If we all could change one thing about ourselves it is being satisfied with mediocrity in:
1) Loving God when he agrees with our soul, heart, and strength; and
2) Tolerating our neighbor as we prefer ourselves.
“But that’s 2 things”, you might be thinking, and “Wow, Perry’s worse at math than I thought!”. But have you noticed when Jesus is asked, “Teacher, which command in the law is the greatest?” (CSB’17 Matthew 22:36), that Jesus gives two?!
If we could change one thing about ourselves it needs to be that we can only obey one of these great commands if we are obeying both! We cannot love God unless we are loving our neighbors; and we can only love our neighbors if we know the love which God loves us. Jesus is our neighbor and our God.
