Isaiah 41:23-24 – Horror-scopes
Do you worship a god made of paper? Idols and human-made gods are false and inferior because they cannot foretell the future (Isaiah 41:23-29). Yahweh’s challenges, “Declare the things that are going to come afterward, so that we may know that you are gods” (Isaiah 41:23). Their falseness means they are “less than nothing” (41:24). Ironically, their existence is as real as their ability to see the future – nonexistent.
Today, Americans don’t worship idols in the sense of Isaiah’s condemnation. But today’s actions are as insulting to God as the idols of past years. Instead of a bronze, brass, silver, or gold idol that seekers ask questions of; today the seekers ask gods of paper and books. They turn to the section containing horoscopes and fortunetellers. Or, they search online for a website with horoscopes. They want to see the future. The word horoscope literally means, “time observer”. They are false seers because they are false see-ers.
Most don’t take it seriously, but some do. Others will “play-along” pretending or making it a game. Don’t pretend and play. God says those who seek after false gods, who cannot prophecy but pretend to, are an abomination (Isaiah 41:24). What a horror, to be seen as an abomination by God! That’s not much of a fortune, but is that your future?
