Isaiah 6 – Reacting to God’s Throne Room
Reaction videos are all the range, but reacting is nothing new. The glorious throne room scene from Isaiah 6 presents two humbling, contrasting thoughts:
1. The presence of God makes me realize my impurity from sin – “Then I said: Woe is me for I am ruined because I am a man of unclean lips and live among a people of unclean lips, and because my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of Armies.” (CSB’17 Isaiah 6:5)
2. The atonement from God makes me realize my response to grace – “He touched my mouth with it and said: Now that this has touched your lips, your iniquity is removed and your sin is atoned for. Then I heard the voice of the Lord asking: Who should I send? Who will go for us? I said: Here I am. Send me.” (CSB’17 Isaiah 6:7-8)
• Are we hiding, shamefully and fearfully?
• Or are we volunteering, cleansed and fearlessly?
• Are we waiting and inactive, seeing our unworthiness?
• Or are we ready, knowing our at-one-ness with God?
• Are we pew-sitting, punching a time-clock of responsibility (or nowadays signing on to Zoom)?
• Or are we outgoing, counting on the promises, realizing grace brings a response of gratitude and activity?
• Are we looking inwardly crippled by guilt?
• Or are we looking outwardly spurred to action?
All these present two extremes. Are we found in the middle?
• Convenience not conviction?
• Comfortable not challenged?
All of us should feel inadequate to be in God’s presence. Let us never forget worship is a privilege, not a right, because we have committed wrong.
• Are we complacent?
• Are we willing to volunteer only in areas in which we prefer to be involved?
• Are we saying, “There they are, let someone else be inconvenienced”?
We are already in the throne room because God’s glory fills the entire earth:
• “And one called to another: Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Armies; his glory fills the whole earth.” (CSB’17 Isaiah 6:3)
What is our response? What are e willing to do and go?
• Is it, sit back, click on?
• Or, get involved, send me?
