Reading Outside Your Circle

It’s good to read outside your circle. I’m reading a book on Philosophy with several chapters I will disagree with, such as an argument for atheism. What I found mentally odd was this atheist became such because: 1) The Problem of Evil; 2) and an argument that allowed morality without theism. This conundrum intrigued me because she recognized a need for the stabilizing force of ethics, but didn’t see it in the world and had a difficult time reconciling it with a God she didn’t understand. However, “Man” is just an evolved animal and animals do not need an intellectual stabilizer to modify their behavior – animals are brutal! That means even morality, if there is no God, is an evolutionary device and nothing more – even if good for society. Morality then becomes subject to the sociological group-mind. That did work – if you were among the master race – for Nazi Germany. Morality though is not just a “good” for society, it is often contrary to one’s own personal safety which is why we have heroes. Thanks for reading, and I will get back to reading; but remember this – morality and ethics are not subjective or societal values. But the fact we internally need this stabilizing standard is a good argument for our internal need for God – “He did this so that they might seek God, and perhaps they might reach out and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. For in him we live and move and have our being, as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also his offspring.’” (CSB’17 Acts 17:27-28)
