Showing Off to Impress a Girl

Showing Off to Impress a Girl
How real are the people in the Bible?
When my future wife attended my basketball games, this 5.11 boy became a 7 foot, shooting, dribbling, rebounding monster! One game she attended, after grabbing the rebound, I started dribbling up the court, hounded by the defense…got tripped, rolled head-over-heels, came up running and still dribbling! That young boy played with ego! This old man still tries to impress his wife!
What does this have to do with how real the people are in the Bible?
In Genesis 29:1-12, Jacob meets Rachel for the first time – and he’s looking for a wife. Here’s the scene. From my perspective the scene is hilariously filled with machismo!
The local shepherds, according to their custom, would wait for the rest of the shepherds, then roll away the large stone covering the well so they could all water their flocks.
Jacob sees a shepherdress, Rachel, approach the well. Later she is described as “shapely and beautiful” (Genesis 29:17).
Then the hilarity begins.
Jacob, a stranger in this foreign land, has the audacity to tell the local shepherds they are there at the wrong time, so they need to water their flocks and leave! Does he want to look assertive in front of this woman? Does he want to eliminate any competition? Does he want some alone-time?
Jacob’s not done showing off. When she approaches, he decides to roll away the stone himself! Muscle city! Flex those swole biceps!
Jacob is still not done! He waters Rachel’s flock. This is what his mother had done leading to her marrying Jacob’s father.
Jacob, aware of his goal, is assertive, strong, and kind. That’s potential leadership, protection, and romantic. This momma’s boy is trying to be a ladies’ man!
Real “girl power” is more about the male ego than anything done by the female. Men will do a lot to impress women. Men and women haven’t changed. That’s why the Bible is never out-dated. It’s about real people.
