The Sin Behind Every Sin?
There is never “just one reason” people sin. If there is an underlying reason causing most every sin it just might be….
- Going back to Eve, she wanted…. (Genesis 3)
- Miriam and Aaron criticized Moses because…. (Numbers 12)
- Korah and incites people against Moses and Aaron in order to…. (Numbers 16)
- The angels did not continue in their own position and instead…. (Jude 1)
- False teachers find followers so that they can…. (2 Peter 2)
That’s just 5 examples, and others could be cited. What do they all have in common? To put it colloquially, “You’re not the boss of me.” To put it more formally, “They each rejected authority.” People want to be their own god. They denigrate God’s concern for them and therefore refuse to believe in God’s ultimate goodness. In being selfish, they claim whether consciously or unconsciously that God is selfish.
There are many ways people reject God’s primary authority and delegated authority today.
- “As long as you are sincere”
- “Marriage is not just between a man and a woman”
- “You don’t need authority to act in worship”
- “Gender roles are cultural, not derived from God”
- “Doesn’t God want me to be happy?”
- “Join the church of your choice”
Rejecting authority, God’s authority over us and His right to be as Creator, Savior, and Ruler, just might be the sin behind every sin.
