The Withdrawal from Afghanistan
There is bipartisan and almost universal acknowledgement that the withdrawal from Afghanistan is a disaster. But this is not a political post. So what spiritual lessons can we learn since the physical often imitates the spiritual?
1. Priorities in Life Matter. Everything in the withdrawal is backwards. Do we have our priorities right?
2. Changing the topic from how and when, to if we should leave Afghanistan is obfuscation. Do we get defensive and try to change the topic when discussing our biblical positions?
3. Blaming the previous administration for starting this mess and then taking credit for making the tough decision to leave. This reminds me of blaming Adam for my sins but wanting to sin anyway. Do we look for a scapegoat to shift the blame for our spiritual conditions such as, “There are so many hypocrites in church!”?
4. Refusing to admit mistakes and compounding everything making more. If everyone makes mistakes, and everyone admits that is true, then why is it so hard to admit specific mistakes, wrongs, and sins? Do we confess our own faults or simply try to correct them with no one noticing?
5. Arguing over words. Saying human beings are not “stranded” is word wrangling, something Paul wrote against to Timothy. Do argue over words so as to control the conversation and make ourselves look better?
The most important point to be made here is this: there is rightful concern over those unfortunate people in Afghanistan who might lose their lives. Are we as concerned and more so over those who might lose their eternal souls?
