What Keeps Me Grounded Yet Growing?
There are personal challenges I face on a regular basis. More than once I almost deserted “the faith”. My challenges come from my interests and work. Let me share how i have stayed grounded yet growing. Notice I said “grounded YET growing”. Don’t confuse being grounded with never moving or changing.
1. Authority of God – “I’m not God”. You’ve heard me express that many times. We all need reminding we are not in charge of our lives or churches. (1 Timothy 1:17)
2. Example of the Gospel – This includes the facts but not just the facts. The example of Jesus shows me by comparison to my own example. The Word became flesh. And His words must become flesh. (Philippians 2:1-11)
3. Inspiration of the Bible – Another phrase you’ve heard me say is “Deal with it”. Having a high view of this difficult topic helps me. Having a high view means I think even specific words are inspired. The value of this is it forces me accept even the difficult passages. (1 Corinthians 2:13)
4. Openness with myself and others – “I don’t know” is another phrase I use a lot. This is one problem, but maybe a greater one is what I do know about myself. Honesty with myself is important. Being honest with others is also essential because it helps me work through things. This is a form of accountability. (1 Timothy 1:12-16)
5. Understanding my limitations – Again “I don’t know”. There are things I will never know. My limitations apply to my God-given gifts. God doesn’t want me to do everything or be like others. I need to accept that. I’ve often said, “One key to happiness is knowing what you are not good at.” This is humility. (Ephesians 4)
If you noticed, the 5 points are the vowels (AEIOU) to help us remember. Examine yourself, and ask what keeps you grounded yet growing.
