Why Do Spouses Cheat?
Why do people cheat on their spouses? One common activator is suffering a trauma such as the death of a parent or friend, a diagnosis of terminal disease, or anything that makes them numb and wanting to feel alive again. They ask themselves, “Is this all there is?”
Here again we find the gospel as our solution. Death, disease, questions about mortality and purpose in life, are answered in Jesus – Why He came and What He offers. “How can we feel alive again?” The gospel revives us spiritually here and now, defeating despair. In the resurrection, life overcomes death and disease. “Is this life all there is?” The gospel prepares us for a future that began in the very beginning, leading to an eternity. We are part of a grand cosmic narrative that is more invigorating than our feeling sorry for ourselves.
Cheating isn’t just abuse against a spouse. Cheating is a sign that one does not have a powerful answer to a threatening question. It is a sign of a shallow gospel. Deepen our understanding of the gospel, and even our relationships ascend higher than just flesh. Then we husbands and wives see ourselves as Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5). The gospel is the unconventional actuator for faithfulness.
