Why Moses and Elijah?
Why did Moses and Elijah appear with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration? No doubt many layers of meaning and purpose. Let’s consider three.
1. Comfort. Later in the garden angels would appesr to comfort – which means strengthen – Jesus.
2. Symbols. Moses represents the Law and Elijah the Prophets. Both are considered the greatest of each and Jesus is greater than each.
3. Story. The main method God uses to convey His Mind is through story. Both Moses and Elijah saw God as He “passed by” (Exodus 33:22; 1 Kings 19:11) on Mt.Sinai. Moses at thr beginning of His mission and Elijah at the end. Each only saw God partially. On this mountain with Jesus, they with Jesus transfigured, God incarnate revealed as God.
Jesus completes narrative teaching because He is The Story.
