Biblical truth standing on its spiritual head to get our eternal attention.

Why Was Eve Not Made From the Ground Too?

Why Was Eve Not Made From the Ground Too?
There are three origins for man and woman.

  1. God – Shared by both as each is made in God’s image (Genesis 1:26,28). The spirit returns to God (Ecclesiastes 12:7).
  2. Earth – Adam directly from the ground (Genesis 2:7); Eve derivatively from Adam (Genesis 2:21-22). The body returns to dust (Ecclesiastes 12:7).
  3. Flesh – Eve directly from Adam’s rib (Genesis 2:23); all children subsequently come from both (Genesis 1:28).
When dealing with people who have been taught total depravity, I ask them them where does our immortal spirit come from, God or man? The answer given is God. They are correct.
On to their corporeal side, why was Eve not made from the ground too? The outlier in this creation story seems to be Eve formed from Adam instead of from the ground. Possibly due to this creation curiosity, Jewish tradition includes something not found found in the creation accounts. That is, Adam’s first wife was created from the ground like Adam. Her name was Lilith. Ignoring that extra-biblical tale, we are left with 3 possibilities in answering why:
[ ] Accepting the text does not tell us why.
[ ] Making up a creative reason why.
[ ] Discovering an inspired reason why.
The first is true. The second is easy, fun, fanciful, but not helpful. The third is where we find all of the three origins listed above in an inspired commentary on creation (1 Corinthians 11).
[ ] NASU 1 Corinthians 11:12: “For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and all things originate from God.”
Now is there any hint in this inspired commentary as to why God did not make Eve from the ground also? It was to make a distinction:
[ ] NASU 1Cor 11:7-10: “For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man; for indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but woman for the man’s sake. Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.”
Creation order is not the only determinant in home and church roles. Creation origin is used also. If God had made Adam and Eve both at the same time, and both from the ground, then there would be no differing roles. But God did. Therefore we are forced to accept one of the following:
[ ] There was no reason for how and when God created Adam and Eve.
[ ] There was a reason for how and when God created Adam and Eve.
