“The Parable of the Bad Back” – Having to preach with a cane and in pain (again), I began, “A weak Christian is like a bad back. When you’re having trouble and in pain, you make many promises. At first you do the necessary things to keep yourself well and strong. Plus you are extra […]

This thought came to me when teaching the book of Micah. The prophet of God weaves past historical events of the Israelites into their present history showing that God is still active. Within the narrative, Micah points to the future such as in 5.2 and I believe all of Micah 7. His name means, “Who […]

Comments Off on Perryism – If we applied the qualifications for preachers (2 Tim.2:14-16,22-25) as seriously as those for elders (1 Tim.3), we’d have fewer preachers and better churches.

Satan disguises himself as an angel of light for sinister purposes (2 Cor 11.14) and although Halloween is not specifically addressed in scripture I question the wisdom of the children of light disguising themselves as works of darkness, as witches, warlocks, and even Satan himself even for frivolous purposes.

Micah means, “Who is like Yahweh?” The answer is “no one,” and that includes a surprise “Someone” “Who is like Yahweh” because He is Yahweh in the flesh. Jesus is “God with us” (Mt.1:23). Finding Jesus in Micah is easy because Matthew points the way: Matthew 2:6 (HCSB) And you, Bethlehem, in the land of […]

Focusing on God’s attributes should not lead to a theoretical, impractical, ivory tower, sitting in the balcony Christianity. As seen in Paul (i.e., Romans, Colossians), theology precedes practical living as the foundation precedes the walls and roof. Today’s Christians want “how to” sermons and books with step by step instructions. “Give me books on finances, […]

Did you ever wonder why the Sermon on the Mount begins with these Beatitudes? Jesus could have said, “Blessed are those who are dead in sin, for they will be forgiven.” “Blessed are those who have no hope, for they will be given life.” “Blessed are those who have been defeated and beaten down, for […]

The tongue speaking in Acts 2: (1) Gains attention (2:5-7); (2) Amazes people (2:7); (3) Equates all people (2:6-11; 2:17-8); (4) Brings glory to God (2:11,19); (5) Fulfills prophecy (Acts 2:16); and (6) Leads to salvation (2:21,38). That is the purpose of plain, non-miraculous, Bible preaching today: (1) To preach we must gain people’s attention […]

In Acts 20:7 when Luke discusses Paul speaking, the Greek is dialegomai suggesting Paul’s “preaching” (KJV) is more like our “teaching.” We can learn the meaning of a word both through its denotative and connotative definitions. First, look up dialegomai in a lexicon and it is denotatively defined as “to say thoroughly” (Mickelson) and “1. to […]

The core of any belief, if right, can withstand the interpretation of any verse, if right. The conflict comes when they contradict. The question then becomes, “Is my core belief wrong?” or “Is my interpretation of this verse wrong?” To casually throw off our interpretation without reinvestigating our core is as fruitless as to casually […]
