Receiving the promise, Abraham lived in the world of “if and when.” Living with expectation can bring hope or become a burden. The burden of expectation is the fear it will not be accomplished. Abraham is a conundrum of fear and faith, just like the rest of us. His faith leads him out of Ur […]

The Hobbit is not the only one to go on an unexpected journey. Fictionally Gandalf called Bilbo. Really and truly Yahweh called Abraham, and Jesus calls us. These spiritual journeys are filled with physical realities, both expected and unexpected. By faith Abraham answers, as do we; but neither of us always lives by faith, or […]

History can be such a cold word, meaning nothing more than facts and figures. The reality is that history is about people, about families – and that is what the future is. Genesis 4:26 says, “A son was born to Seth also, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to call on […]

Not all examples are good examples, but they can be profitable examples. If prayer is defined simply by “talking to God” then Adam and Eve are “praying” in the garden. Prayer begins by the amazing discovery that God wants to “walk” with us in the garden of life He created (3.8). I love the phrase, […]

In reading Ephesians, and specifically 2.11-16 I see re-creation (2.15) in reversing the creation of account. In Genesis man is one (Gn 1), then two (Gn 2), then divided by sin (Gn 3). In Ephesians we have the removal of division by law (2.15) of two groups (2.15) making one man (2.15).

Genesis 1:27 (HCSB) So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female. 2 Corinthians 5:16-19 (HCSB) (16) From now on, then, we do not know anyone in a purely human way. Even if we have known Christ in a purely human way, yet now […]

By grace, the original curses become the fresh blessings and then more wondrous than physically imaginable. What is happening in Genesis 12 when God makes promises to Abraham in this new beginning? Do the curses of Genesis 3 and the blessings of Genesis 12 have anything in common? Often the curses are divided into three […]

The tongue speaking in Acts 2: (1) Gains attention (2:5-7); (2) Amazes people (2:7); (3) Equates all people (2:6-11; 2:17-8); (4) Brings glory to God (2:11,19); (5) Fulfills prophecy (Acts 2:16); and (6) Leads to salvation (2:21,38). That is the purpose of plain, non-miraculous, Bible preaching today: (1) To preach we must gain people’s attention […]

Being damaged by the actions of others can lead us to at least one more temptation – being defined by our pain, what others have done to us. Our total identity becomes what happened to us. We breathe our ache like we breathe air. We wear our past like we wear our favorite pair of […]

Being violated, whether sexually, physically, emotionally or verbally can lead to the temptation of repeating the cycle within your own family. Joseph had two sons. We do not know much about them, but when it is time for them to be blessed by their grandfather before he dies, Joseph follows tradition, firstborn first. When Jacob […]
