Acts 21:1 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV
Acts 21:1 NASB When we had parted from them and had set sail, we ran a straight course to Cos and the next day to Rhodes and from there to Patara;
Acts 21:1 HCSB After we tore ourselves away from them and set sail, we came by a direct route to Cos, the next day to Rhodes, and from there to Patara.
Acts 21:1 ESV And when we had parted from them and set sail, we came by a straight course to Cos, and the next day to Rhodes, and from there to Patara.
Language has the power to paint vivid pictures. The NASB and ESV read, “parted” which is not emotionally evocative, especially after reading about the tears and grieving in Acts 20:37-38. The HCSB captures the moment and the literal meaning of apospaō by translating it, “tore ourselves away from them.”
