Romans and James – Works
“Works” in Romans versus James:
Romans (theological) – “not saved by works” (Romans 4:2) means, our works cannot fundamentally change God to save us because of faith in our works.
James (practical) – “saved by works” (James 2:24) means, God fundamentally changes us in salvation to have works because of our faith in God.
Other succinct ways of saying the above:
Romans – We are not saved by faith AND works.
James – We are saved by a faith THAT works.
Romans – We can’t be saved by our works.
James – We can’t be saved without our works.
Romans – Works cannot make God submit to us to save us.
James – Faith can make us submit to God to work for God.
