Ephesians 2:2 – The Way of the World vs the Way
To sinful Gentiles, Paul writes, “you previously lived according to the ways of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit now working in the disobedient” (CSB’17 Eph 2:2). Notice the 3 demonic influences on the Gentiles:
1. The ways of the world.
2. The ruler of the power of the air.
3. The spirit now working in the disobedient.
What fascinates me is Paul’s description of Satan and his domain; and how it contrasts with our fellowship with the Divine as revealed earlier:
1. The ways of the world vs The Father predetermined Jesus’ ways before the foundation of the world (1:4).
2. The ruler of the power of the air vs Jesus has everything – in heaven and earth, including all ruler, power, dominion, and authority – in subjection to him (1:20-22).
3. The spirit now working in the disobedient vs The Holy Spirit is working in us, sealing us, and being our downpayment (1:13-14).
When looked at from this contrasting angle we are faced with this reality – the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are superior in every way. No wonder God is powerful, merciful, and gracious enough to save us from Satan’s clutches (2:5,8). Why would anyone let the inferior ruler be their governing influence?
