Ephesians 4:19 – Less and Less from More and More
There is an emptiness that consumes. The mind is filled with futility. Understanding is darkened instead of enlightened. The heart is hardened. There is a new self created in the image of God. The mind is renewed within the spirit. Righteousness and holiness of the truth is created within.
These two contrasting paragraphs summarize Ephesians 4:17-24. But there is one phrase I want to focus on that – there is an emptiness that consumes.
In Ephesians 4:19, the result of walking according to the world is, “the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness” (NASB). It is that greediness that is explained in the HCSB that caught my eye – They became callous and gave themselves over to promiscuity for the practice of every kind of impurity with a desire for more and more.
People who are empty on the inside, hardened of heart because they are protecting themselves against hurt, and against help, become greedy within. The consequence is that their sins increase in frequency and decadence. They can’t get filled or satisfied so they delve deeper into the darkness that belongs to the Devil. The desire for “more and more” becomes less and less because they desire more but get less satisfaction.
The emptiness within that consumes can only be filled with the righteousness and holiness within from above. We only become satisfied within when we are filled from above.
