Genesis 1 – A Christian Fish Out of Water
When creating, notice that God is speaking to the environment from which He is bringing life:
• God speaks to the earth – Genesis 1:11) Then God said, “Let the earth produce vegetation”.
• God speaks to the water and sky – Genesis 1:20) Then God said, “Let the water swarm with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky”.
• God speaks to the earth – Genesis 1:24) Then God said, “Let the earth produce living creatures according to their kinds”.
Purposefully and separately, in creation God speaks to the physical environments from which He is creating and in which His creation will need to exist.
Then with distinction, God creates mankind. Then God speaks to a new environment:
• God speaks to Himself – Genesis 1:26) Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness”.
Take a fish out of water and it suffocates. Take a tree out of the ground and it dries up. Put a land animal into the water and eventually it drowns. They all draw life from the environment they were created to live in. Their well-being is foreshadowed in God speaking to their home for which He created them. If we are not in God, we die. If we are acting contrary to our spiritual well-being, we should check our environment. Are we living in that form from which we were created – God’s image?
As much as a fish needs water, humans need God.
