Genesis and Exodus – The New Serpent
The Egyptian Pharaoh’s famously wore the Egyptian cobra (asp, serpent, or snake), used as a symbol of sovereignty, royalty, deity and divine authority in ancient Egypt. Israel had become what mankind was commanded Genesis 1 – many. The new snake is afraid. And here is another echo. They Hebrew is different, but they are synonyms. The Pharaoh said “let’s deal . shrewdly with them” (Ex.1:10). Serpent in Genesis 3 was more shrewd than all the animals, and dealt shrewdly with Adam and Eve. Why would we be surprised that the Egyptian Pharaoh is taking on the role of Satan and the Serpent? The serpent is always there when God’s people are to get mighty!
