1 Kings 22; 2 Chronicles 35 – Ahab and Josiah’s Similar Deaths
- Both were warned of defeat (1 Kgs. 22:17; 2 Chon.35:21)
- Both ignored the warning (1 Kgs.22:29; 2 Chron.35:22)
- Both disguised themselves in battle (1 Kgs.22:30; 2 Chron.35:22)
- Both shot with a random arrow (1 Kgs.22:34; 2 Chron.35:23)
- Both asked to be taken away from the battle (1 Kgs.22:34; 2 Chron.35:23)
- Both died after the battle (1 Kgs.22:35; 2 Chron.35:24)
- Both buried in their capitals (1 Kngs.22:372 Chron.35:24)
People may wonder why such comparisons are important. To me they show God is in charge of history, which is why He keeps repeating the same stories over and over again with different characters. While Josiah was a righteous man, such a comparison shows God was not pleased with his last decision. But the story is deeper. The last unwise action does not deter from God’s over all view of Josiah. That gives me hope (2 Kings 23:25; 2 Chron.34:2).
