Jeremiah 40 – Rock Bottom Offers
The same offer had been offered and rejected time after time and then again. Years help had been offered; but it required something personally offensive to those whose world was obviously falling apart. Finally, after more than two decades some decided to accept.
What changed? What was previously offensive but now palatable? What changed was everything. What they needed to do was surrender their will by surrendering to the Babylonians as God commanded. This story of needed surrender could describe way too many awful lives. The people who lost everything and needed to surrender their will were the Jews. During the time of Gedaliah, in Jeremiah 40, he offers the same solution God had preached through Jeremiah but which had been rejected for over 20 years. Now they realize they had no choice. Whether Jewish freedom, drugs, pride, bad marriages, bad habits, quick tempers, sin, and such; it all begins and ends with surrendering to God’s way. Have you?
