Equal in Responsibility
Equal in Being Responsible
Parents and children are equal in having responsibility towards one another, although their responsibilities are not equal. Notice how similar Deuteronomy 5:16 and 4:40 are in language and promise:
5:16 – “Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and so that you may prosper in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
4:40 – “Keep his statutes and commands, which I am giving you today, so that you and your children after you may prosper and so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you for all time.”
Parents, obey God. Children, honor parents. Children, obey your parents. Parents, honor your God. Children, honoring your parents leads to your well-being. Parents, honoring God leads to the well-being of you and your children. And prayerfully your children will honor God.
Generational faith starts in the family. And has blessings and consequences.
