Evangelism through Singing

Evangelizing Through Singing
A visitor walks into your assembling together. He knows nothing about you congregationally, but he learns one fact almost immediately. “Where is it? Where’s the piano? Can you not afford one?” That is an actual conversation I have had. Churches use music (as in concert-worthy performances) to evangelize. Despite no instrumental music here, how can our singing evangelize this stranger?
1. By the words – Teaching and admonishing one another (Col.3:16). While this originally is interpreted to mean Christians teaching Christians as “one another”, it can definitely apply to anyone learning through singing. It is essential that our singing is scriptural in doctrine. “Poetic license” is fine until it goes too far and teaches falsely. Instead of, “say what you mean”, sing with truth. Sing SAYING WHAT GOD MEANS. That’s what visitors need
to hear.
2. By our hearts (Eph.5:19) – “I don’t think instrumental music is wrong, but I like it because I can hear people’s hearts”. A lady who was a friend from many years ago.said that. She was part of our congregation. Sing with conviction and confidence. Instead of “mean what you say”, sing with full faith and confidence in what you are singing. Sing MEANING WHAT GOD SAID. Visitors need to hear that.
There is a practical result from evangelizing through our words and hearts. That is, singing loud enough for others to hear Singing biblically should have an impact on us through our singing. Singing biblically should also have an impact on our visitors through our singing.
This is what they need to hear:
1. They hear the gospel.
2. They hear other Biblical doctrine.
3. They hear our conviction.
4. They hear what they need to hear for salvation and living a saved life.
What we don’t want to hear them saying is, “They sure could use a piano!” When we have visitors, I sing extra loud! I am trying to evangelize through singing! So I invite you to sing, if needed, with a little bit more evangelizing grace! That what our visitors need to hear!
