Important But Not Essential?

Important but not Essential?
Periodically people will posit that baptism is “important” to God for us to do, but not “essential” to our salvation. My question is, if something is important to God, doesn’t that make it essential for me if I want to be a “man after God’s own heart”?
We could add to the list:
1. Is loving our neighbors including our enemies important but not essential? Or is loving our enemies essential because it is important to God?
2. Is helping the poor, whether widows, orphans, aliens, important but not essential? Or is helping the poor essential because it is important to God?
We could go on. This is not a question of works earning us salvation. This is asking can we be saved if we do not have a heart like God’s?
