Wanting and Not Wanting
Wanting what you cannot have is a recurring thematic plot in the Bible. Most infamously, that is what happened in the garden of Eden. It happened again as seen in David seeing and taking Bathsheba. Then again with David’s son Amnon with Tamar we see like son like father. Before that, Korah wanted priestly leadership equal to Aaron. Aaron and Miriam wanted leadership equal to Moses. Wanting what you cannot have is the essence of temptation. More seriously it is the rejection of God’s plan for you.
Not wanting what you must have is similar. Famously, Paul didn’t want the “thorn in the flesh”. By grace he accepted it. Not wanting what you must have is an affront to and rejection of God’s plan for you.
Commonly, what do we consider the worse? Probably taking what we should not have. That is active insteadvif passive. But consider the seriousness of the latter. If we reject what we must do, how are wer serving God? So as you can see, both are serious affronts to us serving in subjection to God.
May we reject the temptation of wanting what we cannot have. And may we not reject what we must have and do in obedience to God.
