The Hebrew for Seraphim (Isaiah 6:2,6) is translated elsewhere as “fiery serpent” (Num.21:6). One commentator suggested a good translation in Isaiah 6 would be “Burning Ones.” The concept of fire and burning is brought out contextually in Isaiah 6:6-7. Makes for an interesting connection to Hebrews 1:7. Makes me wonder what other connections there are.

There is the theory that there are two Isaiah’s. If so, (and I do not believe that is true), have you ever noticed the beautiful symmetry suggesting sole authorship from beginning to end? Heavens and Earth – 1:2; 66:1,22 Sons – 1:2,4; 66:7,8 Zion – 1:8,27; 66:7 Destruction (i.e., fire) – 1:9-10, 31; 66:15-16; 24 […]

Although Ecclesiastes has its own summation (12:13-14), let me attempt to provide a proverbial assessment that includes the beginning through the end: “God has doomed us to failure so that we may ultimately succeed.” Already I can hear the doubts and disagreements. Speaking in a way that suggests God has doomed us make us uncomfortable, […]

The exact opposite is true. Sometimes an argument is put forth to prove a certain point, but the truth is the opposite of what is being argued. As an illustration, in 1 Corinthians 1:17 Paul asserts that “Christ did not send me to baptized, but to preach the gospel.” Some dispute the necessity of baptism […]

There is a recurring theme found within the history of the Southern Kingdom of Judah; that is, the temple became the personal bank account of the king. Time and again, when threatened by outside armies, the king robs the temple of its gold and silver. This is done to bribe the invading king, or to […]

On the 6th day of the week, God in the flesh said “It is finished” and on the 7th day rested from His work of New Creation. And on the 1st day of the week there was Light.

How are proverbs and parables similar? Both are short and memorable (which is part of their teaching power). Both use human situations to teach divine wisdom – earthly stories and situations with heavenly meanings. Both used existing and accepted ways of teaching but raised them to a new level – neither Solomon nor Jesus invented […]

Psalm 49:8 is said in reference to our physical life, but what an application to our spiritual life – “since the price of redeeming him is too costly, one should forever stop trying” (Psa.49:8). That’s why we need a redeemer! We can’t buy life.

Have you ever heard or read something that became a life-guiding principle? When I was little, my mother said about a preacher who became an agnostic – “He studied himself out of the Bible.” Simple faith got replaced by educated “explain-aways.” Maybe that is one reason I accept Occam’s Razor in interpreting the Bible – […]
