Ephesians 4:8-10 – Don’t Forget the Burial #2
Don’t Forget The Burial (#2). When the gospel is preached, don’t forget the burial. While Jesus’ burial is reenacted in baptism as an immersion, as an apologetic, and our point of salvation, it is more.
Read Paul’s words: HCSB Ephesians 4:8-10: “For it says: When He ascended on high, He took prisoners into captivity; He gave gifts to people. But what does ‘He ascended’ mean except that He descended to the lower parts of the earth? The One who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.” Notice that Jesus descended to the “lower parts of the earth”. This is Jesus’ burial. This is the hades that will not prevail (Matthew 16:18). This is the grave wherein Jesus’ body did not decay (Acts 2:27). Jesus’ defiant declaration and 3 day situation demonstrate how essential the burial is in the gospel plan of God.
Going back to Ephesians, the gospel is more than Jesus lived, died, and was resurrected. That is because the ascension to the throne has a dual meaning according scripture: 1) Jesus was raised from the earth to heaven (Acts 1; Matthew 28; etc.); 2) Jesus was raised from the grave to the throne (Ephesians 4:8-10).
What a glorious gospel when we don’t forget the burial! Have you been buried with Christ?
