John – Signs and Water
Signs and Water
Nicodemus says to Jesus, “no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him” (John 3:2). Then Jesus immediately turns the conversation into being “born of water and Spirit” (John 3:5). Why?
No doubt there are many reasons, including some we will never discover this side of eternity. However, there is this curious fact that every “sign” in John is either directly or indirectly connected to water.
·1st Sign: Water to Wine (2:1-11). This one is obvious and directly involves water.
·2nd Sign: Healing the Official’s Son (4:46-54). In the healing narrative it specifically mentions the previous sign involving water to wine.
·3rd Sign: Healing at the Pool of Bethesda on the Sabbath (5:2-15). Again obvious but this is indirect since the water in the pool was not used.
·4th Sign: The Feeding of the Five Thousand (6:1-15). The narrative involves the Sea of Galilee. So indirect.
·5th Sign: Walking on the Water (6:16-24). Obvious and direct.
·6th Sign: Healing a Man Blind from Birth (9:1-41). Jesus tells him to wash in the pool of Siloam, so obvious and direct.
·7th Sign: The Raising of Lazarus (11:38-44). This final sign in John also involves water, because tears are partly water and even Jesus wept.
Whether coincidence or divine purpose, Nicodemus speaks of signs, Jesus mentions water, and every sign in the gospel of John involves water
