Galatians 5 and 2 Corinthians 3 – Differences between Old and New Covenants
Been ruminating on what is or are the differences between walking after law versus walking after the Spirit (Galatians). Or, what is or are the major differences between the covenant written in stone and that written on the heart (2 Corinthians). For example, both are ethically equal in many commandments – do not murder, do not steal. Both command worship from the heart and are not solely ritualistic. Both are based in love and are not solely work related (Mt.22). Both are based upon revealed truths (Herb.1:1). So what is or are the differences? Doubtless it can be answered completely in one thought. Here is are some ideas and feel free to add. In the Mosaic law, obedience was based upon solely what was written; and in Christ on who we imitate, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In the old holiness was separation from the world based on ritual, dress, and digital mores; and in Christ holiness is separation based upon who God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are. In the old the body was a mark of distinction in a physical way; while in the new the body in spirit is the main instrument of worship. So in the end, the latter is a living covenant because God is Spirit who became flesh so we who are flesh can become spirit. In the end, the Spirit is given to all who want to live; not to a few, and not just to obey, but to imitate. What we do matters because of who God is. And we only know who God is because Jesus revealed Him.
