How Do Church Attract People?
Rode my motorcycle to the church building, and there was a police officer sitting in his patrol vehicle in the parking lot. So I went up to talk. Eventually he asked, “So how do churches promote themselves, I know it’s not a business, but in a way it is. Is it word of mouth?” Good question.
I stressed “We are different from other churches and then made a comparison to businesses. Whether restaurants, grocery stores, or even churches, such will run promotional campaigns. But if what is inside is not worth anything, people won’t return after the promotional. We at the Millersville congregation are wanting to emphasize what’s ‘inside’. And I don’t mean the building. What is inside us that makes what is happening here attractive to people. The answer is, what is Jesus doing to and in us. How we attract people is Jesus. We want to attract people who know they need Jesus”.
John 1:40-42 (CSB) 40) Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed him. 41) He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated “the Christ”), 42) and he brought Simon to Jesus.
Through word of mouth, attract people to Jesus, and their need for Jesus.
