2 Samuel 12 – Why Did David and Bathsheba’s Son Die?

There are many troubling scenes in the Bible, one of which is God – causing, permitting – David’s son to die (2 Samuel 12:14). This is the child he had with Bathsheba when she was still Uriah’s wife. Why die?
This is where I will employ my oft used mantra, “I don’t know. I’m not God. Deal with it”.
This is me dealing with it.
Why die? It can’t because the child was the result of David’s – adultery, sexual assault – with Bathsheba. The child was not the one who sinned.
Why die? When we refocus our hermeneutic to find Christ in the Old Testament, this helps me with this troubling event.
Let’s describe the child:
1. Son of the King
2. Innocent
3. Died because of the sin of another.
4. The sinner did not die.
Let’s describe Jesus:
1. Son of the King
2. Innocent
3. Died because of the sins of others.
4. We sinners do not need to die.
Since it is well established that David himself is a type of Christ; maybe this son of David is also a type of the Son of David.
And one more thing. Lest we forget, the death of Jesus is itself a troubling scene that we have become accustomed to.
