Matthew 6:9-13; Matthew 26-27 – Foreshadows of the Final Temptation in the Lord’s Prayer
Just as the Lord’s Prayer echoes the Temptation in the Wilderness, it foreshadows the temptation in Jesus’ final day before His crucifixion in the upper room, garden and trial.
- “Our Father in heaven (6:9) – “My Father” (26:39)
- “Hallowed/holy be Your name” (6:9) – “He has blasphemed” (26:65)
- “Your kingdom come (6:10) – “I will drink it new with you in My Father’s Kingdom” (26:29).
- Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (6:10) – “Yet not as I will, but as You will” (26:39).
- “Give us this day our daily bread” (6:11) – “Jesus took bread and blessed and broke it” (26:26).
- “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors” (6:12) – “This is the blood of the covenant for the forgiveness of sins” (26:28).
- “Lead us not into temptation” (6:13) – “Stay awake and pray so that you won’t enter into temptation” (26:41).
- “Deliver us from the Evil One” (6:13) – “The Son of Man is being betrayed” (26:45)
- “Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever (6:13) – “Are you the king of the Jews? You have said it” (27:11).
