1 Corinthians 14:26-40 and Genesis 3
The genesis of gender roles begins in Genesis. All three of the restrictive passages are echoes, if not direct references to Genesis 1-3. The least apparent passage is 1 Corinthians 14. A closer look shows us that when Paul says, “as the law also says” (1 Corinthians14:34), he is reverting back to the beginning. Notice the similarities between Genesis 3 and 1 Corinthians 14:
Both scenes involve:
1. Asking questions (3:1; 14:35).
2. Judging if the speaker is speaking truth. (3:4-6; 14:29)
3. Speaking out of place when one should have remained silent. (3:2-3; 14:34).
4. Acting out of submission (3:17; 14:34)
5. A desire (3:6; 14:35)
6. A desire for knowledge (3:6; 14:35)
7. Involves a husband and wife (3:6-7; 14:35)
8. A rebuke in the form of a question (3:9,11,13; 14:36).
9. God’s command ignored (3:17; 14:38)
10. Proper order overturned and restored (3:9,16,20; 14:40).
If we want to understand Paul we must first understand Genesis.
