Genesis 8 – It’s Cold Outside
It’s Cold Outside
Did you know that this cold weather fulfills biblical prophecy?
“As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night will not cease.” (CSB’17 Genesis 8:22)
If we organize this verse, I think it hints at something worth considering:
A – TIME: As long as the earth endures,
B – OLD: seedtime and harvest,
C – NEW: cold and heat,
C’ – NEW: summer and winter,
B’ – OLD: and day and night
A’ – TIME: will not cease.”
The center section (C,C’) is the Bible’s first mentioning of the four seasons, and temperature changes. Night and day, and agriculture (B,B’) of course, are mentioned in creation. What could be the meaning? My understanding is that the flood changed the earth’s climate (and I would say the topography).
So while we rightly think of the rainbow as a sign of God’s covenant with the earth and its inhabitants (Genesis 9:8-13), don’t forget this verse. It too is a promise and therefore a prophecy from God. If we are wise, we will see God even in the everyday, seemingly mundane changing of the seasons.
