We Are Not the King
Read again the parable of the unrighteous servant in Matthew 18. If we think it is about how we should forgive because God forgives us, we missed Jesus’s point.
Read it again and focus on the rights of the king that we do not have, such as insisting on being repaid for kindnesses done and punishing those who fail to repay. Those are the rights of the king. We are not the king.
So if forgiving others because the King has forgiven us is not the point of the parable, then what is? Beware of not forgiving others because the King has forgiven us!
Matthew 18:34-35 – And his lord, moved with anger, handed him over to the torturers until he should repay all that was owed him. My heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your hearts.”
