Baptism as Sacred Space
Baptism As Sacred Space
Leviticus informs within the first four verses that Israelites were SUMMONED (Called), to bring a SACRIFICE (Offering), to the Sacred Space (Tent of Meeting), so that they would be SANCTIFIED (Accepted). Today those four steps are found in baptism.
1. SUMMONED – God calls us to repent and be baptized (Acts 2:38).
2. SACRIFICE – While the ultimate sacrifice is Jesus’s, we are called to die to sin with Jesus (Romans 6:2,5-6).
3. SACRED SPACE – Any place becomes sacred because of God’s presence. We are buried with Jesus in baptism (Romans 6:4), and the Father is present in our baptism because He raises us from spiritual death when baptized (Colossians 2:14).
4. SANCTIFIED – To be sanctified is to be made holy, purified, and separated from sin and to God. Baptism is “for” or into the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38) where we are washed (Acts 22:16), walk in newness of life (Romans 6:5), and when we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit makes us Holy.
Baptism is not just an outward sign of an inward grace. Baptism is where we meet the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Baptism is SACRED SPACE.
