Matthew 12 – How to Establish Authority

| January 5, 2013

Matthew 12 makes a good study in how to establish authority. Three essential truths found within the text is that authority is found within Scripture; that scripture must be applied for it to have any meaning; and that truth can be found, understood and applied. You have the inherent command of the Sabbath to keep […]

Matthew 16:23-24 – Get Behind Jesus or Get Behind Jesus

| January 3, 2013

There is an interesting play on words in Matthew 16:23-24. Peter denies Jesus’ upcoming death (i.e., the cross) and Jesus says, “Get behind (opisō) Me, Satan.” Then Jesus says “If anyone want to come with/after (opisō) Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross….” We either deny self and get behind Jesus supporting Him, or […]

| December 30, 2012

Reading this complicated text, one easily sees the reasoning behind the example of the Priests having to “work” on the Sabbath. It is the example of David (1 Samuel 21) that makes us scratch our heads. So the question is why? 1. Personal – Apparently the Pharisees approved of the example of David and it […]

Perryism – Genius is unorthodoxy that works; Insanity is unorthodoxy that fails; Eccentric is unorthodoxy that is rich; Weird is unorthodoxy that is poor. Grace is unorthodoxy that saves.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel” (Romans 1:16) does not mean we should not be ashamed that we are Christians, but that we should not be ashamed by the gospel message, how God saves people through the gospel, by grace.

Matthew 2:11 – Myrrh

When Jesus was born, myrrh was given as a gift (Mt 2.11). When Jesus was crucified, they tried to give Him a drink mixed with myrrh (Mk 15.23). When Jesus died, myrrh was used to bury Him (Jn 19.39). Even in the birth of Jesus we see foreshadowed His death.
