2 Kings 1:4 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV
2 Kings 1:4 NASB “Now therefore thus says the LORD, ‘You shall not come down from the bed where you have gone up, but you shall surely die.'” Then Elijah departed.
2 Kings 1:4 HCSB Therefore, this is what the LORD says: ‘You will not get up from your sickbed — you will certainly die.’ ” Then Elijah left.
2 Kings 1:4 ESV Now therefore thus says the LORD, You shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.'” So Elijah went.
This verse is a simple example and illustration of the difference between a “formal equivalent” translation and the “optimal equivalent” HCSB. Literally the Hebrew says that the king would not “go down” from his bed. The HCSB translates this into common language “get up.”
