A Prayer Commentary on 1 Thessalonians 3:5-6 – Good New and Bad News

A Prayer Commentary on 1 Thessalonians – I’ve Got Good News and Bad News
PRAYER: Oh God, there are those for whom I am concerned, as to their faithfulness to You, and divine love for others. Bring to me the relief of good news about their stand against the Tempter. Through the One who is the Good News, amen.
TEXT: “For this reason, when I could no longer stand it, I also sent him to find out about your faith, fearing that the tempter had tempted you and that our labor might be for nothing. But now Timothy has come to us from you and brought us good news about your faith and love…..” (CSB’17 1 Thessalonians 3:5-6)
DEVOTIONAL: “I’ve got good news and bad news” Haven’t we all said and heard that? Then comes the dreaded question, “Which one do you want to hear first?”
For Paul, the bad news was knowing the Tempter is out there. He feared his friends had succumbed and that his kingdom work would be ruined.
The good news came back – faith and love won! The good news is that the two Great Commands defeated the Tempter: 1) Faith in God is putting him first and therefore faith leads to loving God. 2) Love for one another can dissipate because our spiritual neighbors become a casualty. How does this happen? We desert them.
“But” for Paul, the small word “but” made an eternity of difference. Who are we waiting to hear good news from and about?
