Mary Is Not My Mother
I had a conversation with a young man considering Roman Catholicism. Here’s how the brief conversation went:
ME – “Can you find the Roman Catholic Church in the Bible?”
Him – “I’m having trouble”
Me – “That’s because it isn’t there”
Him – Saying something about “Mother Mary”.
Me – “She isn’t my mother?”
Him – “Why Not? You follow Jesus and she is His mother?”
Me – “Because in Mark 3 when Mary approached, Jesus said about His followers,
“Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother” (3:35). That means spiritually, Mary wasn’t even Jesus’s mother. She was just His physical mother”.
Me – “Jesus also said in Matthew 23 not to call men ‘father’. Do Roman Catholics give that title to men who are not their physical fathers?”
Him – “Yes.”
The conversation continued, but unfortunately he didn’t follow through. The point is, use the Bible in having religious discussions. God’s word directs the way.
